WorldTel was created at the initiative of the International Telecommunications Union (" ITU "), which is the Geneva-based specialized technical agency of the United Nations with global responsibility for telecommunications technology standards and developmental assistance to emerging markets. WorldTel Bangladesh Limited (WTBL) was incorporated in June 12, 2000 for the purpose of bidding, implementing, owning and operating a fixed line wireless network in Bangladesh . In year 2001 WTBL was awarded the first private PSTN license by Government of Bangladesh (Ministry of Post and Telecommunications) to build, operate and own (BOO) an advanced telecommunications network to provide voice, data and broadband services in Dhaka Multi-Exchange Area (DMEA). The license was granted for a period of 25 years and is renewable prior to expiry. The company currently has a highly dedicated and experienced workforce of 70 plus employees.
Considering the very low tele-density of Bangladesh (with 1 fixed line per 100 people) and huge latent demand in the context of the current macro-economic and telecom environment, WTBL has developed a business plan to address this excellent opportunity. WorldTel commissioned Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) and Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) to perform a Bottom-Up Potential for Telecom Service on DMEA. This envisaged the gradual installation of 300,000 digital lines to cover the Dhaka Multi-Exchange Area (DMEA), which comprised the capital city and surrounding regions.
WTBL is the only PSTN operator in the country to utilized GSM technology which has the widest use worldwide in terms of wireless technology. WTBL is in a position to offer GSM network and its advantages to its valued customers. GSM also has a positive image in the customers mindset compared to CDMA and the customer has a wide choice of easily available and inexpensive CPE.
